Nautical Accessories – Three-Step Guide to Overdoing the Nautical Trend

Nautical is never boring, but some people have a tendency to overdo the nautical accessories when it comes to fashion and interior decorating. These accessories never go out of fashion, so whether you like them or hate them, they are an investment. Wearing one nautical piece, or using small touches of nautical elements in your home décor, beach house or cottage decorating, rather than lots of nautical pieces mixed together, keeps it uncomplicated without going overboard, and give you a touch of class. Here are the unseen dangers of using too many nautical accessories:

Overstating the Look

Tropical decor delights in simple style, and so does the well-dressed lady. You can get a nautical look just by use of color: a navy blue dress, for example, or painting your home sea green. You can also use nautical accessories strategically to get the seaside look. A nautical touch can co-exist with any color scheme or décor. Overstating the look cheapens it and makes it look trashy.

Going too Heavy on Horizontal Stripes

The nautical look is not always a flattering one, particularly when it comes to nautical accessories and clothing with horizontal stripes. Moderation is the key to wearing and using nautical well. Dark navy, almost black, is figure flattering and looks a little like some service uniforms, such as the UK’s police force or Royal Navy. Alternatively, you can go for red stripes or plain white or cream.

Choosing the Wrong Color Scheme

When it comes to nautical accessories and décor, the color palette includes white, blue, navy blue, khaki, and sea green. Flooring, large pieces of furniture, and walls are typically painted in these colors. You can also add life to the room or to the outfit by including vivid colors such as yellow, orange, and red, and by using colored seashells, maritime flags, coastal wall art, and photographs.
