Boating Safety Certificate – What are the Requirements of Your State?

 

If you live in Utah, and you’re between the ages of 12 and 17, you’ll need to attain a boating safety certificate to go power boating on the waters of your state. This requirement may have helped reduce the number of boating accidents and related fatalities. Virginia is also phasing in compulsory boater safety education for everybody until the year 2016. The Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries (DGIF) passed a law in 2007 that will call for all boaters in the state to acquire a boating safety certificate by July 1, 2016. Virginia also uses the Boater Exam course, which is recognized by the US Coast Guard and approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the DGIF.

If you’re under the age of 13, you may not operate a boat in New Jersey. Persons between the ages of 13 and 16 must complete an approved boating safety course to get a boating license to operate a vessel. All persons wishing to operate a power vessel must possess a boating safety certificate as of June 1, 2009. Out of state residents will need a New Jersey certificate, since the state does not honor safety certificates from other states.
